MOVING TO BEIJING - TRANSPORTATION

Many expatriate families, especially those living in Shunyi district, prefer to hire a car with a driver. Driving in Beijing can be difficult if you cannot read Chinese, and hiring a driver who is familiar with the roads and the traffic conditions can alleviate much of the stress associated with driving. It's important to note that in order to drive, you will need to obtain a local driver's licence.

For those living in the city areas, it's easy to manage without a car and driver as taxis are plentiful and therefore a convenient and affordable option. The flag fall rate for taxis in Beijing is RMB10. As most taxi drivers do not speak English, it's a good idea to have the have the name of your destination written in Chinese to show to the driver, and also the name of your return destination.

The subway system is not very extensive, however more lines have been constructed since the Olympic Games. The subway is a very affordable option for getting around the city, with each single trip costing RMB2. It's also a good way to avoid delays when traffic gets very congested, which it often does during rush hour. One drawback is that it can be very crowded during peak hours and less disorderly than what you're most likely accustomed to. Queuing, however, is becoming more common.

Buses are plentiful and cheap, however they too can be extremely crowded and it can be difficult to understand the bus system if you cannot read Chinese.

Although not recommended for long distances or in extreme weather, bikes are a convenient way to get around and a fun way to explore your local neighbourhood. Beijing is a bike-friendly city, with many wide bicycle lanes. Traffic conditions can be unpredictable so pay attention when riding your bicycle.
