Shenzhen is a light industry and electronics production center. Twenty five years ago, little more than a fishing village, Shenzhen is now a thriving metropolis of fifteen million people. As a relatively new commercial and industrial city, there is little here of historical interest, but lots of good shopping. Expat living is quite comfortable: Western standard housing is quite readily available and there are a number of good international schools. It is a clean and comfortable city to live in and even the pollution is not so bad. On top of that, it's proximity to the sea ensures that there is plenty of good sea food.
Another advantage of Shenzhen is it's proximity to Hong Kong. Shenzhen is literally across the border from Hong Kong. Ferries travel daily from Shekou to Hong Kong with travel time only taking an hour. There is also a ferry service directly to Hong Kong international airport. A new border crossing at the Shenzhen Bay Bridge is also a convenient way to get to Hong Kong by car or bus.
